Formed in 1982 by the South African avant-garde artist Warrick Sony, Kalahari Surfers expressed a radical critique of Apartheid through experimental music. Although presented as a collective, Kalahari Surfers was actually Sony’s long-term personal alias, providing some protection against persecution by the South African authorities. Inspired by the sounds and attitudes of hard punk as well as dub, Robert Wyatt, Henry Cow, Frank Zappa and later electronica, Kalahari Surfers work merged rhythmic loops, audio collage and free verse. Based at Shifty Studios in Johannesburg in the 1980s and then at Milestone Studios (Cape Town), Sony released several pioneering and influential albums. His more recent work includes remix and production projects, film music and sound design as well as collaborative recordings and performances with Soweto rebel poet Lesego Rampolokeng. // INTERVIEWS
